Introduction: What are Simple Machines?
Simple machines are the basic building blocks of all machinery. They are the simplest form of a machine and can be used to make more complex machinery. They are usually made of only a few parts, and they can be classified as either a machine, tools, or devices. There are six types of simple machines: lever, pulley, wedge, screw, wheel and axil, and an inclined plane. In this article, we will go through the 6 different simple machines and why it is important to teach your kids.
Types of Simple Machines
The first simple machine is the lever. It is used to change the direction and magnitude of a force. The fulcrum is the point where the force is applied and the effort (or load) is applied. If you have ever ridden on a sew-saw, that is an example of a lever!
The second simple machine is the pulley. It changes the magnitude of a force without changing its direction, which makes it easier to move heavy objects that are at a distance from each other. You can see pulleys usually at a well.
The third type of simple machine is an inclined plane, which changes the direction of a force without changing its magnitude. This can be used to push objects up or down an incline without having to use as much energy as you would if you were trying to move them horizontally on level ground.
The fourth type of simple machine is the screw. The screw consists of a shaft that screws into a threaded hole. The threads on the inside of the shaft are designed to match the threads on the outside of the hole. When you turn the shaft, it causes the whole device to rotate in order to move whatever is on top or in contact with it.
A wedge is the fifth of the six simple machines. It consists of a heavy blade, fixed to a long handle, which is free to rotate about one end. A force applied from above pushes the blade down onto an object below. Common household examples of a wedge are scissors and a knife!
A wheel and axle is a simple machine consisting of just two parts. The wheel or axle turns around the stationary axis. The turning motion can be used to transfer energy from one rotating device to another, or for propulsion. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to drive, bike ride, have shopping carts when grocery shopping, and so much more!
How to Teach Kids about Simple Machines
Simple machines are important because they make our lives easier. They can do things we cannot, like lift heavy objects or increase the distance we can move something. They change the way we interact with our surroundings and allow us to do more. Kids seldom acknowledge the simple they encounter in their life. Pointing it out to them and teaching them about it will help build their understanding of the world around them.
