How to Create a Kids’ Podcast on Spotify

Podcasts have become one of the most popular mediums out there. Since 2004, the on-demand nature of podcasts has made them an excellent choice for our on-the-go lifestyles. Plus, there are an endless sea of topics to explore, so there’s always something interesting to discover.

We may think of podcasts as an adult-only medium. However, there are a bunch of awesome Spotify podcasts out there that are hosted, written, and edited by kids! Suppose your child is considering starting a podcast of their own. In that case, it can feel overwhelming to help them bring their vision and dream to reality.

How do you start a podcast, and what is the best way to go about it? This article will act as a guide to help you answer those questions.

How to Create a Podcast of Kids: Steps & Tips

Now for the fun part – creating a video game! But where can your child even begin to create a video game, and how long does it take to create one? These are great questions, and while it may seem complicated, starting with the basics will help get them there.

  1. Plan Out the Logistics

First things first: you will need the right equipment and software to record, upload, and host a podcast. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A computer/laptop
  • Dedicated microphone (it’s best not to use the built-in one on your computer). The Blue Yeti is a popular choice among fellow podcasters.
  • Editing software to create your audio file and export it as an MP3. We recommend Audacity; it’s free, open-source, and available for most operating systems.
  • A place to host and import your podcast. Popular picks include podbean or buzzsprout.
  • A podcast library, we’ll focus on Spotify, but other popular places are Apple and Google.
  • And finally, a dedicated space. A small room is best for recording as it will minimize the echo but hanging towels on the wall or building a pillow fort to record are budget-friendly ways to record, too!
  1. Determine the Podcast Genre & Select the First Topic

Podcasts are centered on general themes. Whether historical facts, pop culture, sports, health, business, or news, it’s essential to identify what kind of podcast your child would like to host.

Once the genre is solidified, the next step is to map out the episode. What will be the topic? Will there be any special guests? What story is trying to be told?

If you’ve ever listened to a podcast before, you may notice that the best ones sound natural and free-flowing, as if you’re talking to and having a conversation with a friend. The truth is, for a podcast to feel that way, it takes a lot of preparation, planning, and scripting before the person ever hits the record button.

Help your child write an outline and template that each podcast can follow. The outline will help keep your child on track and ensures each episode hits all the right points.

Many podcasters also find it helpful to speak their script before recording to help them get all the kinks out to reduce the editing stage. Also, just because your child has an outline and writing doesn’t mean they can’t riff on the spot. It can always be edited out later if they decide they don’t like it.

It’s all about experimenting with what methods work best for your child! But having an outline and script will help them deliver the best, most conversational-sounding podcast.

  1. Get it on Spotify & Market the Podcast

Spotify is one of the most popular platforms for podcasts. In fact, Edison Research reports that 43% of monthly podcast listeners choose Spotify.

Here are seven simple steps to start a podcast on Spotify:

  1. Create an account
  2. Verify that the podcast will meet Spotify’s requirements
  3. Agree to the terms and conditions
  4. Enter your RSS feed link
  5. Verify that the podcast is owned by you/your child
  6. Enter some details about the podcast
  7. Review and submit

Once the podcast is approved, you’ll want to apply some fundamental marketing to help it gain listeners. Spotify will automatically create a direct link for the podcast – copy the link and share it on social media! Tell all your friends and family members to tune in and watch the podcast grow!
